i am an athletic person and i have recently gotten interested in cycling. ive been looking on line and i am overwhelmed with options and information.

my price range is under $800

i want something to ride on the paved bike trails around here and on the roads, i want to ride the hilly hundred late october.

should i go for a strictly road bike or would a hybrid be better?

hybrid with maybe a light 80mm or 100mm travel fork (with lock out).
since you want to do trails.
but if you're only gonna ride on the roads, get a road bike.
IMHO, hybrids aren't worth it.
not as light as a road bike, and not as strong as a mountain bike

I would go with a hybrid with a solid fork, you don't need suspension on paved roads and most trails. Shocks will eat up energy when climbing hills and add weight and cost. Fitness hybrid bikes usually don't have shocks were the comfort hybrids will.

Visit your local bike shops and try them both out.
