You want a road bike. You have 3 main choices.
Race bike: Those are the ones with super thin rubber, and low handlebars, built for getting as much speed out of the ride as possible with a sacrifice of comfort.
Hybrid: A more upright seating position and wider tires which can handle light trails or grass, a little more useful overall to the average user.
Comfort: These tend to have big supportive seats and an upright seating position, geared for comfortable, light riding.
I would get the race bike because my mountain bike is great for everything except going really fast on pavement, but you need to decide which would suit you best.
Your best option would be to go and check them out for yourself. A decent bike shop will let you try them out a bit.
