Are you sure it was the benedryl or the red dye in it? If the red dye, then they make one with it. If it was the benedryl, there are many other antihistamines OTC that you can try. What was the reason you took the benedryl and what was the reaction?

Actualy my boy friend was givin it in the ER due to an allergic reaction to aspirin and inturn had an even worse reaction to the Benadryl. that was almost 12 years ago. Now for some reason every nite for the past 2 weeks when he wakes up in the morning he has hives. We havnt changed detergant, nor has our toiletries been changed. He even tried sleeping in a different room and in the morning he has hives from head to toe which disperce within hours. he can take a nap during the day and doesnt brake out at all. Due to the allergy to benadryl he has been suffering every morning from the horrible itch. We need to find something he can take to relive it!!!!!

Zyrtec is often given for hives. He may want to see an allergist or a dermatologistand take it in their office in case he has a reaction.

Hello, my son has this problem also. You didn't say what kind of reaction your boyfriend is having but for my son it's a very high irregular heart rate and I just wanted to say Please be careful with the Zyrtec - allergist gave this to my son instead and we ended up having to call 911 as his heart rate went over 200. It was very scary. I would also suggest (like another poster said) that if you are going to try try it, maybe do it in a allergists office where they are equipped to handle emergencies. Good luck.
