I’ve ordered two (I assume, very elementary) books to start reading/learning about astronomy – “Teach Yourself Astronomy” and “Astronomy for Dummies”. They haven’t arrived yet, but in the mean time, and in addition to them, what kinds of things should I start reading about and what would be good places to find out more about astronomy?
This would be on the level of a hobby for a retired person, but I’m not interested in nonsense. I want to find out about things that would be taught more or less on first-year university level.
I think setting up a suitable reading list and finding appropriate websites would probably be the logical first step. I expect (if that’s the right thing to do) I will progress to buying a reasonable (but hopefully not too expensive) telescope in due course, but for now I’d be quite happy with finding out what it’s all about and (presumably?) looking at the night sky with the naked eye or just binoculars.
It seems such a fascinating subject. Any pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated.
