Could you tell me what happens at a common first dermatologist appointment?
What is the common procedure for the examination, and how do they take pictures?

I've never had photos taken at the dermatologist. Basically, the doctor will come in and just look at your skin, maybe ask a few questions about what products you're using. Then, depending on how severe your acne is, they'll prescribe medicines and probably tell you to come back in a couple months. You might want to do some research on various medications ahead of time so that you'll know what to ask for (if you want a prescription for a specific medicine).

The doctor will ask what your concerns are (i.e. acne on your face).

Tell the doc what you're doing now (any over-the-counter medicines? which ones?).

For a problem like facial acne, the doc will likely prescribe topical medicine(s) first. They'll tell you when and how often to apply it.

I've seen 4 derms in my life, and this was true with every one: After that first appointment, the derm will want to see you back pretty soon--about 6 weeks--to see how the new medicine is working and make adjustments if necessary. After that you'll end up going every 3 to 6 months.

I've never heard of them taking pictures either.
