What to do with faulty TPS (throttle position sensor) on 2004 Honda Civic LX?

A couple months ago I had my emissions light go on, and I could feel the car jolting as it shifted gears (automatic) 5 mph above where it usually would. Autozone's free hookup read the code as the TPS. Before I got the chance to do something about it, the light went off and I didn't feel it anymore.

Recently the light went on again, I feel nothing out of the ordinary. Autozone's check was again pointing at the TPS. To pass inspection, I had my mechanic take a look at it and he agreed, it was the TPS, but told me that it was highly unlikely to see this part go for a foreign car. He took it apart, cleaned some sludge out, and popped it back in - the light was off and cleared inspection in the same swoop.

Two days later (today) the light goes back on again.

Do you think I need a whole new TPS? I understand some places believe that you need to buy the whole throttle body (circa 300 bucks) to get this part, but some places actually do sell the individual part (would it need calibration then?).

For an inexperienced mechanic with a service manual and a want to stop relying on a mechanic, is this a job I can do on my own?
