what to do when something gets caught in throat

hey i went out monday night into New York city for my older brother when one of the waiters asked if i wanted some i sayed sure but it was a piece of potato chip like one got stuck in my thoat,

sometimes i feel like gageing i don't know what
to do i keep eating and drinking no coughing but
i feel like gageing what am i going to do i don't

want to die.

I don't know the answer to your question. I choked uncontrollably on many occassions, scaring my husband (and myself) to death. He is always wondering if he should call 911.
I had thoughts along the same lines - what happens if we can't stop the choking? How do we know whether or not we are going to stop?
I thought of teaching my hubby the Heimlich maneuver but gave up that thought. Forget it. Can't be done. Perhaps some of the other posters can think of something.

I drink something real fast if I get that "stuck in the throat" feeling. Bet that chip did hurt! I know it's not possible to do this every time you have a spell but getting in water helps me, Maybe breathing in the warm air of just plain breathing. Easier said than done but try to relaxe. Sit back, close your eyes and make notice of your breathing.
If that don't work, take a Xanax and go to bed! LOL.

Good advice, Charla!

I will ask my doctor for Xanax rx next time I see him (in a week). He is starting to think I need a medication along those lines. Prescribed one (mild) that costs 140 dollars a month. My pharmacist told me to forget it and go for relaxing walks instead. I will ask for this one though because I hear it works. I hope it costs less than the other one???

Try drinking a sip or two of Diet Coke if you get something stuck in your throat. There is something in it that is helps to flush things through. When my Dad was in the hospital on a G tube (feeding tube) the nurses would use a syringe of Diet Coke if anything got stuck in the tube to flush it out. It is also supposed to help if you get something stuck in your esophagus.
