My wife, my 1 year old son, and I just moved into a house with my mom and her 4 year old terrier mix. It's not a "kid-friendly" dog based on behaviors we have seen, so we have set ground rules to have the dog outside when my son is inside, and vice-versa, unless it is night and the dog sleep in my mom's room.
When the dog is outside, he typically whines and yelps constantly. And he does the same if he's in my mom's room with the door closed, and she isn't in the same room. And the pitch of the yelps and whines is beyond annoying. And it gets even worse when he can see my mom in sight. I am a fairly tolerable person but I'm at the boiling point with the dog. I know that the dog's behavior is caused by my mom's lack of proper training. She babies him so much, feeds him the dog food out of her hand, etc. and I think she values the dog's happiness and wellbeing over the rest of the family she lives with. But it's not like I can kick my mom out because she can't afford to live on her own.
The dog has escaped twice in 2 days by digging underneath the fence. My mom lured the dog back with a treat, but then proceeded to give the dog more treats once she had him contained. I know this is bad but my mom can't seem to understand.
Before she just moved in with us, the dog was the only thing to keep her company after my step-dad died, so I'm trying to come up with ways to keep the peace because I would like her to keep the dog if possible. She does take him for walks so it's not like he doesn't get out at all.
The dog is putting a strain on my relationship with my wife and my mom. Is it worth taking the dog to training classes after a few years of improper/no training? Is there anything people can suggest to stop the incessent whining and yelping? Someone has suggested a compressed air can because dogs don't like the noise.
Lil' Bear - trust me...I've thought about it!
tentoes - we moved into a house together where I pay the rent. my mom can't afford a place on her own.
