What the heck is the file "sleepimage" on my mac? its 4GB!?

I'm a music freak so space is getting a little tight in my mac. Can I give this file the boot, or what? I know nothing about it, and i'm not stupid enough to trash it without knowing about it. I'm guessing its very important, quick explanation?
 
Never heard of such a thing. Have you tried opening it? If you've backed up your computer just trash it.
