What the heck is HIKING?

I have never done hiking before so first tell me what hiking is.. In Ireland, I am going to hike with the school. What do I have to wear?? and What are those bags that people carry during hiking?? pls tell me everything

I want to know
what kind of shirts, pants, jackets, shoes, and other stuff I need for hiking??
Also, what are those sticks people use during hiking..
