Playstation 2-thick design

We tried a couple of disk that mum brought for christmas and they are lemons, Set my stepdad into saying he thinks the playstation itself is faulty & cheap one-other PLAYSTATION disk work perfectly in it that have been through a housefire? To me, then it not the playstation issues? right? its the new disk issue?
He say he going to upgrade it? Won't getting a upgrade do more damage then not upgrade it? Causing it to reject the lower playstation 2 disk.
I was under the impression, the slimline design was an upgrade of the originally playstation 2 - less space. The two games we tried were Dora save the mermaids & that had loading issues near the end where the boat just float mid air and won't move & horsez Ranch rescue-had sound issues & as features unlocked the loading issues became a problem.
Explain the sound issues with Horsez-people were talking, but here and there there no sound, although music and background sound were working, when i unlocked a feature of the Angalo Arab horse after i finished riding him, it went to the loading button and froze! I tried again and it kept happening!
