what substances can be tested to see what makes algae grow?

I am doing a science fair project for high school and this is just one idea. If any one has any other cool ideas to test please tell me.
 
Make an aquarium to keep your fish in and put in plenty of river snails. Just a week before the display remove the snails but keep feeding the fish. Algae feeds on nitrogen and without the snails the algae will kill the fish and think that is called symbiosis.
