If you're looking for a smartphone, I'd recommend the Palm Pre or the Samsung Moment. Both feature Sprint's EV-DO Rev. A services and also have wi-fi adapters so that you can utilize extant wi-fi connections. Also, both feature full QWERTY keyboards, so you can text using them. Having used both, I must admit that while I like the Pre's multitasking and multitouch capabilities and the general ease of use of WebOS, the Moment does have a better keyboard and gives you the option of using either the QWERTY keyboard or a virtual one (the Pre only has the physical QWERTY keyboard, although there is a homebrew app to support a virtual keyboard).
If you're not looking for a smartphone, the Samsung Exclaim might be a good idea - it's a dual slider phone with a pull-out QWERTY keyboard and has gotten pretty good reviews, overall.
