What sports can young kids play and understand?

soccer is always fun for kids ! kicking a ball & running round after it LOL

It's more developmentally appropriate to play games that focus on developing those skills, rather then playing a sport. At that age, they really don't have much for competitiveness in them or follow the rules, even.

For example - instead of playing soccer, have a few activities that focus on kicking, dribbling, and stopping the ball. Instead of playing baseball have activities that focus on throwing and catching.

One activity I've seen related with throwing and catching is to have two teams, one on each side of the gym/playing area. Set up different targets - a hula hoop on the far end of the gym is worth 10 points, a bucket near the center line is worth 2 points, etc. Then have the teams throw soft balls or beanbags across the line. Blocking throws is allowed.

You can find plenty of fun activities on PE centered websites. I posted one below for ideas...

-Kickball.
-Four corners.
-Chinese handball. (Divide an area in half using tape or something. Put 2 kids on each side of the line. Decide with team will get the ball first. They will bounce the ball once on the ground, then hit it over the line to the other team using their hand. The other team let it bounce, then hit it back. It's alot like tennis - only one bounce on the ground after each hit, and they can only hit the ball using their hands. You get points when the opponent hits the ball on the divider, after you hit the ball over and it bounces once and the team misses it (it goes off the court), or the other team lets it bounce more than once on their side.)

I'm a sports counselor at a day for kids grades K-8. Any suggestions for the little little kid groups? The kindergarteners are always the toughest to choose a sport to play because they are so small and young.
