What speed should I switch gears on a 2000 Yamaha YZF-R6?

I just got this bike a week ago and I took it out for a ride. I'm not sure when I should change my gears. I change from 1 to 2 when i'm going around 15 mph which is probably 4k. I'm not really pushing the engine enough I think. If anyone that has a 600cc sports bike then you would probably know a close speed. It can be approximate. Thank you!!!
