What speakers should I get for my TV?

I want to get a set of speakers for my TV as the built in speakers are really weedy.
I use my TV for watching TV programmes and using a PS3. On the PS3 I watch DVD's and Blu-rays, play games and listen to music.

My TV is a cheapy HD-ready Alba thing from Argos. It has L+R audio out connectors at the back along with a S/PDIF socket. It also has the standard 3.5mm headphone jack.

The room that the TV is in is a medium/large sized upstairs bedroom.

I was looking at Home Cinemas Systems but they look really expensive for what they are. So I'm instead considering buying a set of PC speakers with a subwoofer (2.1) and just plugging them into the headphone socket.

Is this okay though? There don't seem to be any quality speakers that use the L+R phono sockets at the back of the TV which I assume would give superior sound quality.

I'm just generally a little confused as to what to buy. All I want is a set of speakers with a subwoofer that can give me a bit of rich bass and clear sound. Budget, around £50.
