what size/type of bike would you buy?

I am wondering what size and type of bike you would buy for teenager boys age 15? We don't really want to get a ten speed or anything like that, more like a rough Mountain type bike I think but not sure. It would mainly be used to ride to their friends house, down to the high school to play basketball, etc...

any links to some I could check out or get ideas from would be great
