What size trailer can I haul with a 1999 Ford Ranger bumper hitch?

I will be moving next spring, and I need to pare down my belongings to what I can fit into the bed of my pick-up and the trailer I'm renting. I have a 1999 Ford Ranger 4-door mini-cab. I have a flat topper on my truck, and there is a 2" ball on my bumper (I think. if not, I can change it). What size U-Haul can I safely rent for my truck? I have a light plug at the back for a trailer (flat), but there is not a brake set-up. Any help would be appreciated.

Go to the driver's side door and open it. Look for a sticker with manufacture date, tire size etc. Find the weight of the vehicle. When you get your trailer make sure that the weight of the trailer fully loaded will not exceed 3/4 of that weight because without the brake package you will need to be able to stop it easily and the heavier it is the more time it will take to stop at lights and other sudden stops. It is very dangerous to have the trailer weigh the same or more than the vehicle. Have a safe trip!
