I am looking in to buying a ladies mountain bike. i have looked on various websites as to what size frame i should be buying and they all seem to come up with different answers from 17" up to 22".
I am 5 feet 7 inches with an inside leg of 32.5 inches.

Thanks :-)

Best thing to do is visit your local bike shop (halfords) They will tell you the correct height. You are supposed to be able to stand straddled comfortably either side of the bike. They will advise you.

it really depends, I have a size 16 but my friend who is taller than me by half and inch has a 19. It all has to do with comfort. Go try a few bikes, and see which one is best for you. Just make sure that it isn't to small (when you stand up on the bike with your feet on the ground as close as you can to the handlebars your crotch is touching the frame)
XD

Can depend, that's why some people say 17 and others up to 22.

The geometry of the frames are different with size so best to sit on them to see whats comfortable.

Also, if you take it off road, you want a smaller frame with the seat well up. On road, you want a larger frame with the seat down.

Your riding position will be a slight bend in your leg when foot extended to the bottom. Adjust your seat accordingly.

I always thought, mountain bike, take 12" to 14" off your inside leg and 10" for road.

Ladies have a longer inside leg because I'm your height with a 29" inside leg. But our reach could be the same. Women's undercarriage are built different !!

Well, you have really long legs, so I think buying a women's specific frame is a great idea. But, you need to go to a bike shop and try different sizes to see what fits best. The reach from one bike to the next can vary by several inches, and that's something that can make a big difference in your comfort and performance. I would think a 17" is way too small, as I'm 5'6" with a 30" inseam, and that's on the low end of the sizes I've ridden. I had one that was 18", and one that's 17.5".

Anyway, you can't buy a bike on the internet and expect it to fit you well, nor are they typically of good quality. Go to a real store and try some out.
