What size bicycle do you buy for a 5 year old?

I want to get one for my son's 6th birthday. He's short for his age. And when I look them up online they only list the wheel size. I had him stand over his tricycle, but didn't say why. And he needs a seat at about 18 inches from the ground.

I don't want to ruin the surprise by taking him to the store and don't have anyway to get out without him. I order all his gifts online so I want to get it right the first time.

Maybe you have a bike for your little one and can tell me how high the seat is on it and what size that bike is?

How short is he?

When my daughter was 5, I got her an 18 in bike
She has very long leggs, and the 16 in would been to small

IF he is small, get an 16 in
An 18 in is for like an 7 or 8. My daughter at five, it was fine
Know she is that age, and it's a bit small
I waiting a year and moving her up to a 22 in bike

So, I would say 16, if he is really short
Or 18, if you think he can fit, it will last longer, it he is not to short

Either a 14" or a 16". At 5 mine were on a 16" but they were tall for their age.
If this is his first bike though I would be looking at a 12" bike. You can pick them up cheap and when he comes off the training wheels this is a better size to learn on. Then pay a little more for his next bike (mine went to 16" after the 14")
