What should you do if a horse rears while riding?

Ok. This happened to me once. I was riding and just like that (snap) it got really windy and the rain was pouring. (I was riding a 9 year old gelding in the outdoor arena and I had somebody there with me because..I think because he uses a bit and I have never used a bit on a sensitive horse before..I use bitless) and he spooked. He reared up, and the girl grabbed his bridle because he was trying to gallop off. But I thought I should, so I kinda leaned forward and grabbed some main and made sure I had my stirrups since I was up there for a while while he was shaking his head and trying to run off.
Is that what you are supposed to do? I was never taught before, and since now I ride more spirited horses who say what they are thinking, I thought it would be nice to know..haha.
And she only grabbed the bridle because it was my frist time riding him and she was trying to calm him down.
Thank You!
(ps. I am not green, I just want to be sure..haha.
Yeah..I didn't really like the fact that she grabbed the halter, and I was basically hugging him and yeah because I didn't want him toppling.
No, this was a spook. I rode him a couple weeks ago and he was just an angel. :)
