How Did a Particular Historical Event Affect American Society?
The period between 1920 and 1960 was an eventful one for the United States. Consider the boom times of the 1920s and Prohibition. What about the Great Depression? the rise of fascism and the struggles of World War II? the beginning of the Cold War and the Atomic Era? Events in each of these eras were reflected in changes in American popular culture and society.
Consider the following example from World War I. Right after the sinking of the Lusitania, a German embassy worker’s briefcase was discovered on a railroad car. The briefcase contained plans to disrupt the American economy. Because of this event and others, Americans developed an increased fear or foreigners, especially Germans. Many schools stopped teaching German. German street names were changed. Nativist feelings and organizations resurfaced in the United States.
