What should I use to coat a wooden sculpture to give it a 3D smooth effect?

I have recently had a baby and have calved a set of letters for her name out of wood to put in her baby room. I used a band saw so the letters are very squared off. Rather than sanding them round, is there some type of plaster material that I can coat the letters in to give them a "chunky" effect?
