What should I use as an oil paint solvent?

I'm away at college. I've realized I've missed painting and want to take advantage of our art studio and get back into it again. This will be my first time painting without direction from my high school teacher and being provided with supplies so I'm trying to figure things out on my own. What would the best solvent be to use as far as using it as a paint thinner? I am slightly afraid of turpentine because I don't know how the odors and other hazardous factors would do in my campus, so I don't know if I should go with a turpenoid or mineral spirit. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
