What should I know about writing to a friend who is in Basic Training?

A friend of mine left on Tuesday for the Air National Guard Basic Training, and I heard back from his family and got his address last night. I was wondering (because I've read so many things online) what happens...does someone read your letters before you friend does (isnt that illegal?)...do they get everything you send?

I already know no care packages, no food, nothing of bad taste...I just want to make sure he get's what I send him...it just seems weird that others can just open your letter and read it.

I'm also thinking of sending a larger envelope that will contain stamps and envelopes incase he gets the chance to write back to me and so he can write back to his family.

Anything thing else I should know when writing letters to someone in Basic Training for the Air National Guard?

Thanks so much.
