I no NOTHING at all in football
So can someone explain to me how NOT to look like tard when watching a game?

to much to explain go rent a football training tape will tell you the fundementals of the game.....

ok here it goes. the game starts with a coin toss, the winner of which gets to decide to either kick the ball to the other team, or have it kicked to them. this is the opening kick off. one team kicks and a player on the opposing team will catch the ball and run as far into the other teams end as possible. wherever he is tackled is where the first play will occur. the ball is placed where the player returning the kick fell and the offense and defense line up there. the offense now has 4 chances (called "downs") to progress the ball 10 yards by either passing or running with the ball. once they make 10 yards or more, they get a fresh set of chances or 'downs', and have to make another 10 yards. if they fail to make the 10 yards in the first 3 trys, they will use their last down to punt the ball, which is a drop kick to the other team. the point of this is to give up the ball but have them start deeper in their own end on offense. if during offense you run into the other teams endzone with the ball, or recieve a catch in their endzone, you score a touchdown worth 6 points. after this you have a chance to kick a short fieldgoal (an attempt to get the ball between the uprights at the endzone) for 1 point, ro go for another touchdown worth 2 (called a 2-point conversion. you can also kick a fieldgoal at any time on offense for 3 points (although most kickers need to be within at least 45-50 yards to do this successfully). their are 4 quarters in a game and the teams switch sides at every quarter. each team has 3 timeouts for the first 2 quarters, and another 2 for the last 2. hope this helps.

Hmm, if you want to know try looking up some rules on wikipedia.

I'd say to know:

The game starts with a coin toss, the team who wins elects to either kickoff the ball or recieve. (Almost all of the time they chose to receive)

After the return of the kick, the receiving team gets 4 downs (plays) to go forward ten yards. If they do, the downs start over at first down and they must go another 10 yards. If the team doesn't make it ten yards by the fourth down, they will most likely punt the ball away to the other team.

If the team makes it into the endzone they score a touchdown, which is worth six points. After that they have a chance for the PAT (point after touchdown) which is usually a field goal through the uprights (big yellow things) and is worth one point, although some teams "go for two" which means to do another run or pass play and try to score another touchdown from the 5 yard line, this is worth two points.

I guess those are the essentials, just do your own research and pick up on things from watching games. Good luck!

OK, many different people are gonna tell you a number of different things about what you need to know about football. But here is my attempt...

Two teams are playing each other to see who scores the most amount of points. Simply put, points can be scored by way of touchdowns (where a player on one team gets the ball into the other team's end zone which is located at the ends of the field, or the team can kick a field goal, which is when one team kicks the ball through the big Y looking thing on the ends of the field. Each team has four "downs" to try to get a "first down, which means that they are given four more downs. A first down can be achieved by way of getting 10 yards or more within those four downs. Due to field positioning, where a team's offense is on the field, being an issue, on fourth down, a team will likely punt if they are on their end of the field.

Terms:
Offense
Quarterback (QB) the player that throws the ball or hands the ball to the Running Back

Running Back (RB) the player that will block the QB or carry the football towards the other team's end zone

Wide Receiver (WR) the player that will run down field on a play so that the QB can try to throw the ball to them

Offensive Linemen (OL) the players that snap the ball and try to prevent the other team's defense from getting to their QB

Defense
Defensive Linemen (DL) the players that try to get past the other teams OL so that they can tackle the quarterback or whoever has the ball

Linebackers (LB) the players that line up behind the DL and either cover WRs, tackle the RBs or run at the QB

Defensive Backs (DB) the players that play further from the "line of scrimmage", covering the WRs when they run down field and try to prevent the QB from throwing the ball too far down field.

General
Line of Scrimmage: where the ball is placed every play, and where all players have to start from, it is as close to the other team as you can be before the ball is snapped

Ball being snapped: when the OL hands the ball or throws the ball between their legs to the QB to start the play

Feel free to email me with any other questions. It is a complicated game with A LOT of strategies, so there are a lot of different things that can happen. There are also penalties, which I will explain if you call me.

Observe the game and how others around you react to what's going on. Ask questions about things you don't understand.

My girlfriend has been picking up the terminology pretty quickly just listening to me talk to the TV (wow, that kinda makes me sound like a loon, haha).
