What should I expect to change my oil pan in 2007 Ford Edge?

I had an oil change while on a road trip this summer and found that my oil plug was stripped out. They put in a "pan saver" plug in the mean time. I went to my Ford dealer because they are the ones who have done all my oil changes. I told them what happened and they came back with that they "had never seen the likes of it" in reference to the new style plug. I asked about getting a new oil pan and they came back with a quote of $2300 because their Ford manual said they had to take my oil pan out. I looked under my car and don't see a need to pull engine out to replace oil pan.

I suggested that maybe they re-tap the plug and the guy said it was a risky move. I found this to be incredible and figured this would be a fairly common practice.

I am looking at other mechanics that seem to have more confidence in tapping and putting in a slightly larger plug.

Am I mental for thinking $2300 is way too much? Am I thinking re-tapping is simpler than it is?
