I have done quite a bit of amateur shooting, for 4-H projects, my own benefit, and to share with friends. I'd like to get started shooting events and portrait sessions on the side, but first I need a few things:
1. What is your advice on a decent SLR Camera? (Keep in mind I am a poor college student)
2. What resources (books, websites, etc.) do you recommend to fine-tune my knowledge?

cowgirl87,

A great SLR for the next level is a Mamiya RB67.

The RB67 is very well made, makes a great image and is extremely affordable. Under $300 with a prime and back.

* Study the old masters (Weston, Bresson, Adams)

* Read as many technical books as you can.

* Set a goal of shooting pictures every day, at least a roll.

* Visit some brick & mortar photo galleries.

* Look at "coffee table" eye candy books

* Check out the gallery at http://photo.net/gallery/

* Take some evening college courses.

Enjoy and have fun....
