What should I do for back to school (hair)?

Ok so I have a heart shaped face and I wear glasses sometimes... I have dark brown hair and it is just reaching my shoulder... I wanna get it layered And side bangs would that be good for me? I really want something different because I ALWAYS have it up in a pony tail...
