What should I be looking out for when it comes to buying a guitar effect pedal?

I have an electric guitar and this will be my first electric guitar pedal. My standard of playing is probably intermediate and above. But I have no idea when it comes to guitar effect pedals and which makes I should be on the look out for.

Any recommendations of proven brands and why?
