live in anothers basement for 10 yrs? I read a short story many years ago that was written by what I believe to be a Russian author in which one gentleman stages a bet with an acquaintance to live in his basement for 10 years or so. The terms were pretty much the first man has to stay down in the other's cellar/basement for 10 years, is allowed to leave whenever he wants (but if he does the bet is off), can read whatever material he requests, and if he makes it to ten years without leaving he is granted his "host's" entire estate, money, and business. However, during his stay in the cellar he learns many things and his "host" becomes worried his friend might actually make it through the ten years even though his business is crashing and wouldn't have much left in the end anyways. After the first guy stays down for ten years he takes nothing and I believe rejects his former ways. Does anybody have any idea who the author or name of this story is?
