What RPMs to ride at

I ride at about 2200 to 2400 around town. I match what ever gear gives me the desired speed in mph to the 2200 or 2400 rpm range. My mileage then stays in the low to mid 40's. On a side note that gives you about 80 to 90% of the available torque and great burst of power with out down shifting. 3000 rpm = 80 mph (76 on the gps), so that's a good cruse speed also.
 
I use the old Truck driving rule..If you can easily gain speed and the engine runs free it's not lugging. If you roll on the gas and don't gain speed or the engine sounds labored it lugging.

Going down hill, or decelerating the RPMs can drop very low without lugging.
Going uphill or accelerating 2700 RPM or more.
Flat ground I'll cruise along around 2200-2300 RPM.

I'll also agree with this. If you read in your owners manual it says to shift into 6th gear at 60mph.......take that for what it's worth.
