What RPMs to ride at

Fellars (and ladies),

What RPMs do I want to avoid to stay away from the dreaded "lugging". I have only had metric bikes (with the exception of a Low Rider) and am not familiar with where to keep the tach. I am on a stock (race tuner on order, due to extreme heat of the desert) 2010 Ultra Limited and ride mostly at 70-75 MPH on the freeway. I'm not used to the low RPM range of an air cooled bike. The last big bike (2007 Honda goldwing) didn't care where the RPMs were, it just pulled. Tried a search and must have missed the correct terminology. Any advise is appreciated. Thanks, folks...

Thanks for the input, Yogi. On the Harley it just seems so fast, which is funny considering I've had a Hayabusa and CBR1000RR within the last 5 years! ;-) I love the Harley and will never go back to metric, even though the GW is faster/quicker. It felt like such a sewing machine motor. I really enjoy the low RPM torque, but I don't want to harm the engine by running too low of an RPM.

whayever feels right, don't buy into a certain rpm is too low or high. your bikes tune, road conditions, load, quality of fuel....... too many factors to concider.

mine happens to be about 2750 rpm. With the map I have, it has lots of pickup from there and sounds really nice when just cruisin along.

Cruzin carelessly down the road.... 6th gear 2000rpm=50-55mph

yeah i down shift when i need to pass

You'll get the feel of it pretty quick

first time you try leaving a red light and you find yourself in second gear, you'll hear the lug

good luck
