What would you be looking for if you were making a cricket team, and what role do you think the players have to play?
I would pick
2 openers that can attack well and defend when needed. They should take the shine off the new ball and see out the openers. Preferably, a right hand/left hand partnership.
no.3 should be the 'rock' of the team. He should be able to adapt to the situation, if he needs to come in at 1/0 of 1/100.
batsmen 4-6 should be all able to attack when needed and be patient. They should know how to grind out an innings and really buckle down if the team is in trouble, or get quick runs if chasing down a total.
no.7 should be a player who is able to bat, but not a specialist batsman. this player is most likely a wicketkeeper, but could also be an allrounder eg. Imran Khan. This batsman doesn't neccessarily need to buckle down and make a big score...but he might have to on the odd occasion. This player should be aggressive and should be able to wag a little bit with the tailend
no.8-11. Preferably 3 quicks and a spin bowler, but it's ok to have 4 quicks, if the pitch is right. These 4 should be able to take 20 wickets and bowl reasonably economically, putting pressure on the batsmen. They should hit good lines and lengths 5/6 balls.Hopefully, one or more of the quicks and swing the ball and all quicks should be able to seam it eg. off cutters
the spinner should hopefully do what he's meant to and spin the ball, with good flight, dip, and other variations.
