What role did serfs and peasants play in the French Revolution?

I'm pretty sure that they were a lot less passionate about the Revolution, as they often grew their own food and were less affected by the rising food prices. I also remember reading that they were actually slightly royalist. Is this true?
Well, the third estate overthrew the government, but that was mostly the bourgeois. I need to know what the peasants did.

And, i'm a junior in IB European History.
 
as far as i remember, the serfs overthrew the government due to the unfair classification
 
I think that they were in the 3rd estate. 97% of the population were middle class. idk about serfs though
