With half of the Everglades' original development converted to agriculture, housing, and other development, Florida and the U.S. government launched the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan. Approved in 2000, the 30-year plan is intended to restore 18,000 square miles of wetlands. As a result of these efforts, Florida currently has over 41,000 acres of reconstructed wetlands, many of which act as giant water treatment areas. Bird populations have already rebounded along restored portions of the river, and water quality has improved.
