what phones can i use with the alltel/verizon switch?

we have not yet signed a contract with verizon, but i dont know if i can use an used alltel contracted lg tritan if i want to manually switch phones because i broke mine? the phone does not have a contract anymore but i just dont know if i buy it can i use it?
