This photo: http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/MRO/multimedia/mro20080303earth.html from Mars was taken on October 3, 2007. The photo shows what, even when accounting for the perspective of someone on earth, looks like a first quarter moon. Yet when I checked a moon phase calendar for 2007, October 3 came up as last quarter.
