Washingtons election(1789)? I hadn't realized that it was 13 years after the US declared its independance that George Washington first took office. Who was in charge from July 4th, 1776- April 29th 1789???
 
The Nation was under control of the Articles of Confederation. i don't know a lot of the specifics, but you can google that and see what you get.
