So i'm heading off to university next year to study cgi animation and want to buy a new PC that will easily manage with programmes such as Maya, 3DS Max, ZBrush etc etc. I have no idea what graphics card i'm in need of, processor or even the amount of ram so any help is very much appreciated.
Thankyou.

You don't need a powerhouse PC to purchase but whatever PC and brand you intend to buy from be sure to note that it must include a video card (not IGP) installed with a rating of at least 256MB DDR2 or higher.

The amount of RAM is pending on which OS you're planning on buying. If the 32-bit OS then The OS can only read up to 3.5GB as usable. Otherwise Vista Home Premium 64-bit can utilize the 12GB of RAM you have installed. DDR2 memory type is decent enough and DDR3 is pricier but can deliver.

Dual-core processors are a good choice for the money but Quad-core processors make excellent workstation CPUs for multiple applcations running and software that requires your CPU to be @ full load.

Good luck and I hope this helped.

Whatever you buy. Make sure its LGA 1366 socket.

I normally suggest AM3, but that's 'cause I mostly talk to gamers. For you: you need LGA 1366.

I suggest the Core i7-920. Good Luck.

Also: if you live near a MicroCenter, I suggest you buy from there.

6GB is all you need. And depending on your budget, I suggest you buy a Radeon 5000 series card. If you got enough, you can buy 2.
