What parts or how much CGI was used in James Cameron's Titanic?

Much of the 'ocean scenes' were shot in a tank in North Carolina, the same as one of his previous film, "The Abyss." The 2300 or so people on board were actually a scant 100 that were morphed into 'virtual actors' by Cameron's new technology.

Was there alot spent in CGI? Someone was trying to tell me that they actually filmed the ship sinking and people actually jumped into the Atlantic Ocean which I think is not true at all but I could be wrong.

Quite alot of the film was real

He built a real ship that was on a hinge and broke in half

the shots of the ship in the open ocean are all CG, just like the dolphins
