What painting options do I have when painting a wall that is not smooth?

My bathroom wall is not smooth at all, unlike the rest of the walls in my house. I am not sure why but I do not want to have to sand it all down. Is there a specific painting technique that I can use that will kind of hide the imperfections in the wall? I wallpapered it previously and don't want to do that again.
 
ok, you can do alot to help this bathroom out. Try spongeing it with two different but similair colors, or you can also sponge it and then glaze it over with a tinted glaze. either way would probably improvve it. god luck,
