The problem there isn't that marketing scheme is wrong, the problem is they priced themselves out of business by being $200 over the price of the X360 and $350 over the price of the Wii, which released only a couple days later.

All that has to happen now is Sony needs to lose some of it's big exclusives (MGS and FF) and it is done for. The only thing making the PS3 attractive is these exclusives. It's still too soon to say whether Blu-ray has a chance, so if Blu-ray fails, that's another huge blow to Sony.
