what mri results mean

Jason:

You'll have to ask a more specific question. What can we help you with? Do you have pain? Have you had an MRI? What has your doctor said about the MRI results?

ok here is what my mri says.At L3-4 minimal circumferential annular bulge with a slight ventral flattening of the thecal sac.

At L4-5 there is a circumferential annular bulge and moderate central posterior disc protrusion. This causes ventral flattening of the thecal sac. There are minimal degenerative facet changes and there is some minimal narrowing of the proximal neuroforamina bilaterally.

At the L5-S1 there is a circumferential disc bulge and left posterior and forminal disc protrusion with some degenerative spurring of the vertebral end plates. This appears to displace and minimally compress the left S1 nerve root.It appears to abut but not displace the right S1 nerve root and the significantly taperd distal thecal sac.In conjunction with degenerative facet changes there is mild left foraminal stenosis. There is only minimal narrowing of the right neuroforamen.

I have already seen my Dr. and the first time I seen him he thought he would do a discectomy instead of a fusion like the first Dr. wanted but after this mri he said we would try ESI and Ph.Th. but that they probably would not work and that now we would do a double spinal fusion. But he released me back to Light duty.So during all this I forgot to ask what exactly the mri said.I think it says that I have 2 ruptured discs and one bulged.Am I right?

Yes, a disc protrusion can also be called a herniation. They may be calling it a protrusion as it is not so far herniated that it is way out of the area it should be in (I recently spoke with someone who had 80% of the disc material protruding so that was a true herniation).

You will find different doctors, all in the same field, who have different opinions. What I found is that I found someone who actually had luck with a spine surgeon and after a year was thrilled with his fusion. Since I was no longer happy with my doctor I went to this other Orthopedic Spine Surgeon who was very good, very open to extensive discussion and I ended up with a L3-S1 fusion (I had previously been fused L4-S1).
