I have recently taken up mountain biking again and bought an apollo for £100 off a friend that he'd bought for £200 used it a couple of times before he got bored. It's done me alright to check I'm still into it but found that things just keep coming loose and the brakes keep needing adjustment, and had a badly buckled wheel which I expected with a cheap bike, I found that on a recent trip to the lakes with plenty of off road that it did alright but noticed a big difference with my friends e.g brakes and when we hit roads they would leave me for dust gear changes were smoother and bikes were a lot lighter. I'm looking to invest in a new bike for between £300 to £500 with front and back disc brakes, hydraulic suspension I'm after some advice on what makes and what I should look for to get a decent mainly off road bike but can be used occasionally on road for the money all advice would be great because I'm still learning and whether the budget is enough.
