What might cause my 2005 dodge neon sxt to hiccup at stop lights and the

check engine light to come on? It mainly only hiccups when stopped in drive, not in park. Only once in a while it hiccups while actually driving. A light (shaped like a box which I am assuming is the check engine light) has not been on until today. I have changed the spark plugs and the air filter but it hasn't solved the problem, so is it a sensor? Any suggestions?
