What might be causing the noise in my car?

I have a 99 Nissan Altima with about 105 thousand miles on it. I use the car mostly for short trips. The last day or so it has been making a soft whirring sound whenever I hit the gas (volumn of the sound increases the more pressure I put on the gas pedal). It's a similar noise to the whir of an RC car. I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas what might be causing this, before I take it in to the mechanic? I know it's a lot of detail to go on and you can hear the noise, but thoughts would be appreciated.
