What mental exercises can I do to stop having such low self esteem?

What has worked for you?

I was just wondering, since alot of times, if a guy acts interested towards my direction, I have to fight the urge to look behind me to see if there's a gorgeous woman. It even gets as bad as if a guy becomes friendlier than 'just friendly' and/or even compliments me, I could barely stop myself from quickly trying to stop it. I have no idea why, I even recoil from guys who bend down to smile flirtingly at my direction, only because I keep thinking, first second off the bat in my head, that it's not possible I can receive that attention. That they were doing it to make fun of me, or that they simply didn't really look at me properly, or were extremely short sighted.

I dunno, I just can't be myself besides either panicking or giving a very doubtful or confused look at somebody during those kinds of moments. I know it puts people off, so I just want to know how people were able to combat it.
