Hey under
Most cold medicines are safe, but there are a few exceptions and considerations that need to be taken:
-Don't take cough syrup [ex. Robitussin]. It can exacerbate asthma symptoms--and when you're sick [or at any time!] that's the last thing you want.
-Remeraber that decongestants can be dehydrating, and can dehydrate your lung tissue, which also isn't a good thing.
I'm going to see my doctor on Monday and ask her about this, so if I remeraber, I'll report back and let you know (I'm really busy for the next few days, but hopefully I'll remeraber.)
Other than that, your best source of information aside from your doctor can be your pharmacist. If you've got a cough and congestion, they will likely recommend guaifenesin congestion syrup (as a heaRAB up, this didn't work for me. But that's not saying it won't for you!) which is safe for people with asthma.
Keep taking your control medicine, and increase it IF recommended by your doctor. If you need to, take your relief inhaler as needed.
I had this question in my asthma blog, and another blogger who is a severe brittle asthmatic and a former respiratory therapist recommended to me just to fight it out with the inhalers, and switch to a nebulizer if I had one. If you have one, neb treatments are probably a lot more effective if you're congested in your chest.
Get well!
