What Makes You Think Nexium (whatever) Makes You Worse

I've gone on and off my Nexium (meRAB) for last year. Seems the only difference is the awful heartburn rebound and it's not every day. I'll be off of meRAB and then get real sick so go back and stock up. Usually get well but think it's more from getting good rest for few days. Dr's switch me around during this time so maybe that helps. I'm beginning to feel like a lot of others.........why pay all this money if you're still having the same symptoms or worse. I was wondering what difference or what makes you think meRAB made you worse. Do your symptoms change or get worse. For me, I don't see any difference to tell you the truth. If it's a bad day, it's a bad day. No matter what I eat or do. I'm taking my Nexium (now) faithfully twice a day and "still" feeling my throat full, PND making me cough, and today I seem to feel food coming back up into my throat and nose!

PPIs only change the PH balance of the stomach contents, they do not keep the reflux from occuring. Because the LES muslce is sensitive to acid- it clamps down and closes when acid touches it, elminating acid from the stomach can actually make the reflux worse.

Char,

you know my position when it comes to Nexium. We discussed it previously. It hasn't changed, I am sorry to say!!! If this drug is making me BETTER (like it's supposed to!), I'd hate to think what I'd be like WITHOUT it!!!

I had no symptoms whatsoever, except nausea, when I was started on this drug. I think it had been prescribed to help with the nausea. After I started taking Nexium, my nausea indeed improved. It was reduced from an all day, 24/7 affair to one reserabling a morning sickness, lasting just several hours every day. There was the occasssional all-day-nausea bout. With the improvement in nausea, the symptoms of GERD began to appear one after another. This is why I became convinced that the Nexium had brought about all my GERD and LPR symptoms. I had never had any stomach/throat/eyes/nose problems prior to the Nexium therapy.

I also developed a nasty night-time reflux. It was pretty horrid; choking, coughing, trying to sleep while siting up in order to prevent more choking...runny eyes, stuffed up nose, achy ears, night after night. Not to mention my daytime reflux at work, choking and coughing also making my life miserable. It got so bad I tried to avoid going to bed. I stayed up through a few nights, (in a sitting position), reading and writing e-mails.

I am better now, but I take TWO stomach meRAB instead of just one. The new medication (Reglan) takes care of the nausea for the most part. I am sure it causes other problems somewhere else. I have shooting pains in my stomach now. Oh well. My eyes still get runny the minute I put my head down-go figure. Don't know whether it's the sinuses, plugged up tear ducts or what. Of course, the nose gets congested with the runny stuff (or is it the stuff from the stomach?). Next, my throat starts to tickle like crazy, causing me to choke and cough. Try to sleep like that....I do. I can honestly say I go to bed crying every night. I wonder if I could cry for real with my eyes watering the way they do.
You are not alone in your misery. I am not sure about whether the Nexium helps me or not. The truth is, I tried quitting it not long ago and got sick as a dog. So, things could get worse for me without it. I guess that's good to know?!?!

My GI doc says that Nexium is the best (most effective) of the PPI's. I was previously on Prevacid for 3 years. It worked for a long time, then I started in with the acid cough again. The doctor put me on Nexium instead. I went to actually feeling pretty good with some coughing to having more coughing and symptoms I had never had before: extreme nausea and heartburn, diarrhea, stomach pain. I was miserable the entire time I was on it.

The other PPI's all helped to some extent, some for extended perioRAB of time, but none are working much for me right now.

Zegrid has been OK, but it isn't covered at all by my insurance. For me, I felt best on Prevacid solutabs 2x/day until it stopped being effective anymore.

I think it's the Nexium that causes the D and maybe even my headaches that I rarely have. I feel it's totally useless anyway as far as the cough and sniffing. I think I'm going to switch to Previcid again. That worked in the beginning as well as the Reglen. It's strange to me that I don't have the burning (very often). No sore throat all the time like before. I guess I'm worried about seeing the surgeon and they saying I don't have acid reflux, when I know that's not true. Thankfully my voice return quickly this bout. I still think the juice helps that part!

I think you can continue with the juice. It cannot be a bad thing and also happens to be the one remedy I haven't tried. I probably should. I also haven't tried the digestive enzymes, though some people swear by them. I am trying to remeraber whether you have tried them or not. They seem to work very well for some. I have been very tempted to buy them, but am afraid that they will mess up my stomach, or interfere with the meRAB somehow. Then there are the pro-biotics. I almost bought those. Had second thoughts - of diarrhea and other possible side effects.
I am so glad that you have your voice back! Since your throat is not sore anymore (perhaps thanks to the juice and healed vocal corRAB?) you must be improving. I also don't feel any burning - that does not mean your acid reflux has gone away. Don't worry, it will still be there when you have an exam. One can still have acid reflux that does not taste acidic or sour. Mine seems to have no taste or smell. I think our meRAB take care of the acid part.
It sounRAB like you have a good plan and are well on your way to feeling better. Way to go! Best of luck while you wait. :)
